In our life, we are always brought down or stopped by hurdles pushed in front of our footsteps to success, but is this always a bad thing? We may find it frustrating at the moment, but did you ever look at the message and reasoning as to why you were thrown this hurdle? With my horrible experience, I was knocked down numerous times and always came back stronger than ever, but it wasn't just strength that I found. Along with this, I found a new passion which led me to pursue a career as one of those who helped me through my tough time: a Child Life Specialist. For those of you that don't know, a Child Life Specialist is a person who helps children, mostly in hospitals, get through and persevere through rough patches in their life. I myself had a Child Life Specialist designated to me throughout every single hurdle thrown my way during my 4 month battle and without the help of these inspiring individuals, I do not know if I could have gotten through these challenging times as well as I did.
The idea came across my mind as I struggled to figure out what to apply to college for. As I started to question my interests, I realized that I had always had a passion for helping others and working with children. Nothing made my day more than to see that I had helped a little kid make a new friend at a summer recreation camp or just to see someone smile in general. In light of this, I remembered my very first Child Life Specialist and how I had walked in as a frazzled 15 year old and came out as a flamboyant and joyous child who had just overcome their first procedure under anesthesia. With this fond memory of my first visit to a hospital, I remembered the warmth and joy I felt after cracking jokes with him and overall just talking about our fun interests instead of remembering being so frantic as I felt the anesthesia kick in. This memory sparked a passion in me and a new thought as to be a Child Life Specialist. I always knew that I wanted to help people but I knew that I could never become a nurse all because the fact of I am not too keen on having someone's life in my hand. Instead, I would rather their hand in my hand as I help them through a tough time that I have experienced first hand myself. The realization that I could change the lives of thousands of kids per year makes me jump for joy because I know that I will be their sense of hope just as my Child Life Specialists were to me. There is nothing more in the world that I would want to do than to walk into my job, play games with kids, and help them find the strength they never knew they had in them.
The moral behind this is that hurdles are always thrown at us, but it is what you decide to do with this hurdle that matters. You can either walk around it or you could soar above and do more with this hurdle and make a change in someone's life. Always try and find the positive in these bad situations because in the end you never know when your positive affirmations from a horrible situation could help someone else find that hope too.
